Competency 01 · of 05

Administering networks and the Internet

Context

Level 2 (BUT2) — “Administering a network”

Why — mastering network administration is essential to keep infrastructures running, secure and scalable.

What — design, install, configure, administer and troubleshoot networks and services (DHCP, DNS, VPN, QoS).

Where / When — SAÉ 1.02, 1st year (BUT1), lab project on EVE-NG. · How — from planning (addressing plan, choice of VLANs) to device configuration, then connectivity testing.

Essential components
  • Choosing the appropriate network solutions and technologies
  • Respecting the fundamental principles of IT security
  • Using a rigorous approach to troubleshooting
  • Following industry rules and practices
  • Keeping up with technology
Professional situations
  • Designing and administering a company's IT network infrastructure
  • Installing and administering a company's network services
  • Deploying and administering fixed-line solutions for a telecom operator's customers
Actions / evidence

Project — SAÉ 1.02 “Enterprise local network”: design and simulation, on EVE-NG, of a branch office network (fictional company “Rudy and Theodor Company”, ~60 workstations) — physical and logical structure, one VLAN per department (Management, Users, Servers, Administration), inter-VLAN routing, DHCP and a Linux server, then network extension using the VTP protocol. Cisco 2960/2800 equipment.

Traces — EVE-NG lab (configuration file), diagrams and addressing plan, Cisco IOS configurations, Wireshark captures.

Takeaways — transferable know-how

The full process — plan (addressing), design (VLANs, routing), configure, then test — together with solid networking fundamentals (Cisco, VLAN, DHCP) carries over directly to administering a real company infrastructure.

Critical learning outcomes — Level 2 (BUT2)
  • AC21.01 — Configure and troubleshoot dynamic routing in a network
  • AC21.02 — Configure and explain a simple QoS policy and the basic security functions of a network
  • AC21.03 — Deploy client workstations and virtualised solutions suited to a given situation
  • AC21.04 — Deploy advanced network services
  • AC21.05 — Identify operator networks and the architecture of the Internet
  • AC21.06 — Work in a team to develop professional skills
